Artist Statement

Growing on Lake Erie in the 70s and 80s, sailing was a big part of my life. It wasn’t just an activity, it was our community.  From day sailing on homemade boats, to crewing on tall ships, I have had the opportunity to pilot or crew on a wide range of sailing vessels. This experience has shaped me as an artist.

Stylistically, I have been influenced significantly by the abstract minimalist movement, chiefly Ellsworth Kelly and Robert Sibbison. I had the privilege of working with Robert Sibbison while at the Artist Gallery in Frederick, MD. My current body of work is the convergence of these two influences; abstract minimalism and sailing.

As a high school student, I dreamed of my work being hung in museums and collections all over the world.  However, instead of pursuing a Fine Art degree I chose a career in Technical Writing, a path that took me to Japan for four years and eventually into writing requirements for mobile apps and other software. I worked in the wireless network and mobile app world for 25 years contributing to interoperability standards for mobile devices and applications. I chaired a cross carrier consortium to enable smart phones to read QR codes in 2009 - 2010.  While my art may not adorn the walls of the MoMa or Guggenheim, QR codes are now hanging in museums all over the world.
