Artist: "T. Lynn" aka Terri Lynn Warley Murray" Age: 68
Portrait Sketch Artist T. Lynn POV Statement:
"A photo can capture a moment. Yet my portraits draw on a lifetime."
Yes, my pencil-to-paper process begins with a photograph to nail down feature alignment and establish proportions. This comes after I've studied my subject. Pictured how they move, their gestures, what makes their eyes light up or run for cover. Recognize that subtle "Mona Lisa" smile right before a belly laugh. Understand what makes him swell with pride. Fall in love with what she loves most about herself. Hundreds of shades are layered and blended for hours, days even weeks. Leveraging my nearly 70 years of experiencing faces. Until shapes, tones, textures merge and suddenly the page gives way ...to a life all its own. What a rush!
Signed, T. Lynn
Portrait Sketch Artist T. Lynn BIO 2023
T. Lynn, aka Terri Lynn Warley Murray, 68, (Born and reared in Detroit at its zenith) began as a professional concept artist/art director, yet just recently discovered her talent for creating interpretive portraits. While her technical process requires a close-up photograph of her subject which helps ground her sketches in reality, what emerges is a different story.
"To do justice to my subjects, I take time to walk in their shoes, see the world through their eyes, feel it from their cultural, socio-economic, age, gender and personal point of view. Then, I study or if need be, imagine how such a person expresses themself within their natural locale," T. Lynn explains.
"These steps are necessary to honestly interpret the surface emotions and underlining state-of-being that dictates what features should be emphasized to express this individual's super-self image. So, no two portraits in my collection are alike. Each is a unique reflection of the person who inspired it."
This is quite evident in T. Lynn's use of varied, detailed and sophisticated stroking and blending techniques which have significantly elevated color pencil illustration way beyond its former casual craft designation. No wonder why T. Lynn portraits are being accepted and honored as a legitimate medium of expression by the exhibitors of fine art.
